Black to BMX - 2023

This is a short photo story about rippers on small wheels chasing big dreams in the Alp-Adria region. The photos were taken during two events - at the final round of the Alpe-Adria Cup in Gencsapáti, Hungary, and at the Styria Championship in Baierdorf, Austria.

UCI Downhill World Cup - 2022

I had the chance to photograph three races of the UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup season in 2022. These images are from the Lourdes, Leogang and Val di Sole venues.

For many, downhill racing is the pinnacle of mountain biking. Race runs are usually between 3-5 minutes long, and the tracks go through a very challenging terrain with rocks and roots. Athletes have to show extraordinary mental, physical and technical skills to perform at the highest level of the sport. In recent years, World Cup racing became so intense that riders often risk serious injury during their race runs, if they want to get to the top and win a race.

Moon.Dust.Cloud. - 2010

Moon.Dust.Cloud is the chronicle of the work I did with the ‘Basetrack: One-Eight’ project. The project, led by Teru Kuwayama, was launched to show the deployment of the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiments of the United States Marine Corps from August of 2010 to March of 2011 using social media platforms. I spent three straight months embedded with the Marines in Helmand, the longest shift among team members, and created multimedia dispatches - photos, interviews and sound-designs based on my audio records - from the ground, often in a very challenging environment.

The project aimed at connecting family members with their loved ones serving in Afghanistan and educating them about the circumstances in the country. At the time of the project, the war in Afghanistan became “America’s longest war”, often referred to as the ‘Forgotten War’. For the soldiers returning from the war loosing the fight at home became a real thing.

Although the team was not able to cover the deployment in its entirety due to security concerns, the project received recognition from the international media industry, and contributed to a better understanding of the circumstances of those men and women who served there.

Dreams For Reality - 2008

In the fall of 2008 I was assigned by National Geographic Hungary to shoot a photo-report about the Hungarian National Circus. The report was published as Manézsvarázs. The time spent with the troupe gave me the opportunity to appreciate the hard work that creates the magic of the circus. Getting to know the members of the Hungarian National Circus and the Richter family, I also understood that the almost fairy-tale world of the circus is built on values that are exemplary beyond the circus tent - family, tradition, trust. Without circus-dynasties there is no magic, without trust there is no salto mortale.

The Land - 2006-2009

The land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River is the birth place of ideas, beliefs and traditions which later became the foundation of what is known as Western Civilization. Part of this shared heritage is also wars and conflicts raging ever since humans inhabited this piece of land, and their impacts often reach beyond the geographical borders of the region. Against the backdrop of the image of the land being the cradle of civilizations, for the people living there, for the Israelis and Palestinians, daily life is more about struggling for existence.

The Land was my first major international project. Between 2006 and 2009 my base was in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. During this time I lived among both Israelis and Palestinians to document their daily lives, to understand the emotional cost of war and the need of finding a home.

Witness - 2006

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people make the pilgrimage to the scene of the Nazi concentration camps to pay tribute to the memory of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust during the Second World War. There have been survivors and relatives from all over the world coming to the scene, to face the horror. The memorial site established in the place of the camps is destined for remembering the crimes against humanity and and to disclose truth for the generations to come.

March Of The Living is an annual educational program commemorating the liberation of the concentration camps and to remember all victim of the Holocaust.

When you listen to a witness, you become a witness.” - Elie Wiesel

The Budapest Jewish Community - 2005

For more than two years, I had been following the lives of the Jewish people who lived in the historic Jewish quarter of Budapest. Due to the changes in society after the political transformation and with the passing of the totalitarian state, there had been a renaissance in Jewish religious and cultural life in Budapest. The Budapest community was also the center of the Central-European Jewish communities so that local changes played a determining role in the fortune of the whole region. With my thorough ‘documentagraphy’, I wanted to give an authentic description of the life of the Jewish community in Budapest today.

Sheltered In The Middle - 2004

Boldog, which is situated 60kms from the Hungarian capital, Budapest, almost in the middle of the country, was founded in the 15th century. According to the legend, the people escaping from the Turkish troops found shelter in this area, and the village mayor stuck his sword into a hillock and said the following: "This is the place where we are going to live and we are going to be happy here." (the name of the village, Boldog means happy in English) Due to the good arable land, the ca. 3000 inhabitants of the village traditionally settled down to agricultural activity. During the past few decades the Hungarian agriculture has suffered severe losses mainly due to the economic changes. In April 2003, 84% of Hungary's population voted for the EU, and consequently Hungary entered the European Union on 1st of May, 2004, as one of the ten new members. The economic changes of the country resulting from the joining, are creating new competitive terms, to which people dealing with agriculture will have to adjust.
